Kolkata (RNI) Scores of people across the country have fallen prey to fraudsters through the so-called "digital arrest scam," losing substantial amounts of money. However, a vigilant young man from Kolkata thwarted an attempt by scammers who tried to target him.
Anik Bose, a 22-year-old theatre artist, actor, and model from Kolkata, received a video call on Saturday, January 11, from someone impersonating an inspector of the Delhi Crime Branch. The caller, dressed as a police officer, alleged that Anik’s phone number was being used to extort people and that an FIR had been registered against him with the Delhi Crime Branch.
Shortly after, Anik received another call—a voice call—from someone claiming to be an investigative officer of the Delhi Crime Branch. The impersonator on the voice call asked Anik for his mobile number, the complaint number related to the alleged FIR, and his Aadhaar card details, claiming it was necessary to verify him.
Realizing it was a scam, Anik disconnected the call and avoided sharing any personal information. He also informed his nearby police station about the incident, taking proactive steps to ensure his safety and alert local authorities to the scam.
“This was a clear attempt to intimidate and extract sensitive information,” said Anik. “These scams prey on fear and trust. I urge everyone to be cautious and to never share personal information over unsolicited calls or video calls.”
The "digital arrest scam" is becoming a growing menace across India. Fraudsters impersonate law enforcement officials and use fear tactics to extort money or personal information from unsuspecting individuals.
Authorities have urged citizens to verify all claims and report such incidents to their local police or cybercrime helplines. Anik’s quick thinking and awareness helped him avoid becoming a victim, serving as a reminder to everyone to stay alert in the face of such scams.
