ARA------------------------ The SDRF recovered two more bodies from the Sone river in the late evening on October 8, 2023 who were identified as Anjali Kumari and Anita Kumari. With this the SDRF fished out all the five bodies of young girls from the river Sone. Five young girls including a newlywed woman had met their watery grave in the river Sone at Bahiyara Pattharawa Ghat under Chandi police station in the evening on October 7, 2023 while taking selfie during Jiyutia bath in the river. They were identified as Chandrawati Kumari 16, Suman Kumari 15 daughters of Chitranjan Verma, Anjali Kumari 19 daughter of Devendra Verma of Chandi under the same police station, Anita Kumari 20 daughter of Dadan Rai of Kunjantola under Chandi police station and Nisha Kumari 18 daughter of Dashrath Yadav of Karawa Milki under Udwantnagar police station. Anita Kumari daughter of Dadan Rai was married with Rishabh Kumar son of Prabhunath Rai of Narayanpur under Koelwar police station on February 25, 2023. Rishabh Kumar is a railway employee and is posted in Maharashtra. She had come to her parents’ house at Kunjantola four months ago and since she was living there. Anita Kumari and Nisha Kumari were nieces. Police rushed to the spot and requisitioned a team of SDRF but the divers failed to find out bodies due darkness. On Sunday the SDRF after much effort, fished out three bodies of young girls namely Suman Kumari, Chandrawati Kumari and Nisha Kumari and also trying to find the rest two bodies. Suman Kumari was a nine class student while Chadrawati Kumari had passed the matriculation examination this year and Anjali Kumari was a graduate student.
Women who had come to have a dip in the river said that the place where they were taking bath had already been dug up with machine. Due to this, there was a pit. The woman who came from other villages had not idea about the pits in the river. The girls drowned while taking selfie. After the incident, there was an outcry on the ghat. Hearing the cry of the devotees, the locals and the divers rushed to the spot but it was too late. The divers searched for them till dark but in vain.
Chitranjan Verma is a resident of Karanja village of Naubatpur in Patna district but he lived at Chandi under the same police station for the last 20 years for livelihood. Chtrnjan Verma sells golgappas at Chandi Chowk while his elder brother Devendra Verma sells samosa. Both support their families through this.
Meanwhile, Jawahar Lal Singh, CPI-ML expressed concern over the sudden demise of five young girls and said that the party is with them in this hour of grief. He held the government, district administration and the sand mafias responsible for the tragedy and added that the digging of sand with Poklane machine was not stopped despite repeated demands and no action was taken against the sand mafias. He said all the five young girls drowned in the river Sone due the illegal digging of sand and earlier hundreds of children had so met their watery grave.
