A one day Academic Seminar was organized in the Golden Jubilee Hall of Maharaja College by the Post Graduate History Department in the presence of teachers and students of the college with the main objective of understanding the historical background of the ‘Ara House” situated on the campus of the college and the events related to the movement of 1857 in which Babu Kuer Singh had played a prominent role. The ‘Ara House’ located on the campus of Maharaja College is a living embodiment of the first war of Independence in the year 1857.

ARA----------------------A one day Academic Seminar was organized in the Golden Jubilee Hall of Maharaja College by the Post Graduate History Department in the presence of teachers and students of the college with the main objective of understanding the historical background of the ‘Ara House” situated on the campus of the college and the events related to the movement of 1857 in which Babu Kuer Singh had played a prominent role. The ‘Ara House’ located on the campus of Maharaja College is a living embodiment of the first war of Independence in the year 1857. The main objective of this seminar was to apprise the new generation of the important heritage as well as to make them aware of the amazing story of the first strong and stiff challenges to the Britishh imperial power. Principal, Maharaja College, Professor, Alok Kumar presided over the meeting while Assistant Professor Arun Kumar Rai conducted the meeting and Dr. Rajesh Singh extended vote of thanks.

The progamme began with the release of the proceedings volume of the 82nd session of the Indian History Congress (Warangal) for the college library by the Principal. The special feature of this proceeding volume is that it was presented in the 82nd session of the Indian History Congress last year by Prof. Md. Niaz Hussain, Head of the Department, Kakatiya University, Warangal and Assistant Professor Arun Kumar Rai of Maharaja College, Ara. The research paper “Ara House--The Living Testimony of the Revolt of 1857 in Shahabad Region of Bihar” was published in Modern India, Volume 3, serial No. 74, page-833-839 which is available for the study of the teachers the students as well in the college library.

The Head of the Department, History, Maharaja College discussed in detail about ‘Boyal Kothi’ popularly known as ‘Ara House’ and added that when battalions number 7, 8 and 40 started moving towards Ara from Danapur Cantonment, raising the alarm of rebellion, Babu Veer Kuer Singh of Shahabad area had forced 50 Sikhs including 9 Europeans, 6 Eurasians to take shelter in the Ara House cell for a week. During confinement, Kuer Singh showed indomitability, bravery, courage and tried his best to achieve victory but shortage of ammunition, the support given to the British by the Sikhs soldiers and the army of Major Vincent Eyre ruined his plans. In view of its historical importance, the Art and Culture Department, Government of Bihar recently listed it as ‘Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Site remains and declared it a protected monument under the Kalaidhi Act-1976.

Speaking on the occasion, Assistant Professor, Rajesh Kumar Singh advocated emphasis on local history writing while emphasizing on innovation in research.

Assistant Professor, Dr. Amritanshu talked about writing thesis and research papers after comparative study of local writings along with foreign records as primary sources in history writing. Taking lesson from the past, Dr. Sunita Sharma called for strengthening the institute through mutual cooperation in the present. Professor Chanchal Kumar Pandey said that for the preservation and promotion of historical places around us, sensitivity of the common citizens including the government is necessary. He said that the subject of research is available around us which needs to be identified and brought to the national platform. Professor Sanjay Kumar while discussing many historical places in Shahabad region, laid emphasis on their conservation and promotion. Dr. Kamlesh Singh discussed the personality of Veeer Kuer Singh.

Principal, Maharaja College, Professor Anil Kumar encouraged the teachers to do such research work and assured all possible help in their venture.

Professor Sanjay Kumar, Dr. Sunil Yadav, Dr. Om Prakash Arya, Dr. Pragya Rai, Dr. Patel, Dr. Shailesh, Ms. Mona, Pinky, Dr. Vijendra and many other teachers were present on the occasion.Many students including Bijendra Singh, Mukul, Shahinda, Anshu, Shubham, Suraj, Mithilesh, Sunil, Priya, Nusrat played a commendable role in making the entire program successful.
