Ara, 6 June 2023, (RNI): One married woman was beaten to death at Sundarpur village under Sandesh police station in Bhojpur district for dowry. Later the in-laws packed the body and threw it into the river to erase evidence. The police recovered the body from the Kumhari village and brought it to the Ara Sadar Hospital for postmortem. The deceased was identified as Shakuntala Devi 24 wife of Munna Kumar of Sundarpur village. She had lacerated would on her body. An FIR has been lodged with the police under Sandesh police station against the husband, father-in-law, mother-in-law, uncle-in-law, two brothers-in-law and grandgather-in-law in this regard on the statement of Butan Kumar brother of the deceased. Police are investigating the matter and also conducting raids to arrest the miscreants.

Quoting the FIR, the SHO Sandesh police station Awadhesh Kumar said that Shakuntala Devi of Jakata village under Chandi police station was married to Munna Kumar son of Mantu Yadav of Sundarpur village under Sandesh police station on May 2019. Two days after the marriage, the in-laws demanded a motorcycle and a gold chain in dowry and when their demands were not fulfilled, the in-laws thrashed her to death and threw the body into the Kumhari river after packing the body in a gunny bag.

Butan Kumar brother of the deceased said that the in-laws tortured her for motorcycle and a gold chain and so she frequently came to her father at Jokata village under Chandi police station. He had consented to give a motorcycle and a gold chain. She had come to Jokata two months ago and had returned to her in-laws on June 1, 2023.
