LIFE IS AT STAKE WITHOUT ENVIRONMENT EQUILIBRIUM—Dr. P.K. DWIWEDI

RAJIV NAYAN AGRAWAL

ARA-------------------------------A seminar dedicated to the environment, was organized with the students doing internship at the Krishi Vigyan Kendra.

Addressing the seminar, senior, scientist, Dr. P K Dwiwedi said that mere plantation is not enough now for the environmental equilibrium but several factors creating pollutants by the human beings must have to be reduced. Today temperature is increasing rapidly which is quite dangerous for future life. Dr. Dwiwedi said that there was no significant increase in temperature in the last 100 years as much as it has happened in the last 50 years. In the coming 50 years, it is possible for the temperature to increase by two to three degrees. He said that to maintain and even to decrease temperature, plantation at a large scale should be done rapidly, soil erosion should be stopped at micro level and the soil quality should be improved and also it is also important to keep the soil clean. He said that today water is being used and misused rapidly for irrigation and other purposes in the fields but proper arrangements for water conservation are not being made. We are only exploiting water from the earth and in such a situation, after a limit, the situation of water supply will become dire. He further said that today the water level is dipping 15 to 50cm every year. The rivers are getting silted due to soil erosion and over 250 crore metric tons of soil is flowing into the seas every year. In such a situation, a serious problem can arise. He stated that there is a need to prevent it. Dr. Dwiwedi further said that it takes 100 to 500 years for the polythene and thermocols, we are using , to get converted and the soil is no longer soft.  A layer of polythene is forming under the soil due to which the soil’s ability to absorb water is losing and all these factors are responsible for rise in temperature and if we are not alert, the day is not far when our very existence will be in danger. He gave a clarion call to plant more and more trees, reduce misuse of water and lessen the pollutants in the environment for the wellbeing of human lives.

Ram Nath Thakur, Moni Sinha, Madhav ji, Satyam Kesari, Dheeraj Kumar, Arpit Kumar, Udit Kumar. Ujjwal Kumar, Adil Parvez, Sachin Kumar, Aditya Raj and others were present on the occasion. .
