ARA------------------------Following the instructions of the Education Department, regular homework is being given to students in government schools. In some schools homework was already given and after the instructions, almost all the schools swung into action and showing keen interest in giving homework to students. Gils are more interested in doing homework than boys and arrangements for studies have been made as per the school target table.

The syllabus has been given a new name as “Lakshya.” It has been decided in the target which chapter of which subject is to be taught in which month. The target table has been displayed in every primary and middle school. The target table is considered to be an initiative of Bhojpur District Education Officer (DEO) Ahasan who has made and implemented it. The Additional Chief Secretary of the Education Department K K Pathak has also praised for it and is has been implemented in entire Bihar.

Dr Praveen Priyadarshi, Headmaster, Yashoda Girls Middle School, said that about 70 percent of students complete their homework. If homework is not brought from home, the concerned teachers get it done in the classrooms. In the teacher-parent meeting, parents are told that their children do not complete homework from home. Apart from this, a discussion is also held with the parents in case of low marks in the examination.  He said that separate efforts are made for the students who get D or E grades. Jackie, a parent who is a carpenter by profession, said that due to lack of study environment at home, homework could not be completed. Due to lack of knowledge of the subject, they are not able to help in completing the homework. After coming back from schools, girls also have to help their mothers in household works.

Some teachers such as Richa Kumari, Salim Ejaj, Rajesh and others said that following the instructions, homework is being given to students in all primary and middle schools including secondary schools and they also regularly checked them. They said that almost 70 percent of the children complete their homework and the remaining children are made to complete their incomplete homework in school onn the next day. They said that the number of students who do not understand the questions or have difficulty in solving the questions is less but 30 percent students habitually do not do homework daily. Mahesh Kumar, a student of class IV said that his mother does not tell him anything while doing homework and on the other hand, Anshu Kumari said that her mother is illiterate and therefore, homework is not done.

Parents Baiju Kumar, Seema Devi and Ram Kumar said that in rural areas, while fathers go out for work every day, women living in the houses are not educated at that level to enable the children to complete homework and so interest in completing homework is not increasing among children. In the primary, middle and secondary schools of Garhani block of Bhojpur district, instructions have been given to give homework to the children but in some schools the instructions are limited on paper only. Sanjay Bihari Mishra, Principal, Janata Plus 2 High School, Baligaon said that since the order has been received, all teachers have been told not to forget to give homework at the end of the class. Principal, Upgraded Middle School, Karnaul, Anand Kumar said that every day students whatever is taught, are given homework and all the children do their homework.

The tradition of giving homework is not being followed in the school. Homework is not being given in most of the schools. Some schools are following the order of giving homework but those homework are not checked. According to Mahavir Pandey, guardian of Pagar Nagar Parishad area, said that homework has become a thing of the past. Now neither government school children nor parents are worried about homework.  Anil Kumar of Sahajani village said that homework is not given in the local schools.

Homework is not being given to all the school children of Shahpur block in Bhojpur district. Anil Dubey, teacher, Har Narayan Plus 2 School, said that they give homework in their subjects also checked them. Other teachers also give homework after teaching their respective subjects. Parents Chandan Ojha said that education system is improving day by day.

As per the instructions of the Education Department, this time, a diary for homework has also been provided to the children along with the textbooks so that homework given by the school can be evaluated by the teachers. Brij Nandan Singh, teacher, Kulhadiya School said that this system is actually a big idea to bring change in the field of education. Information has been received about its introduction in the schools of the Kulhadia block. The students of the Kulhadia High School said that the answers to the homework given by the teachers are written on the blackboard next day and the children themselves compare the answers on the answer sheets. In many schools, teachers, parents and children had different views. Homework is not being checked properly in many schools of Bhojpur district.
