It may be said that Gupta Dham temple in the midst of the Kaimur hill forest is a famous lord Shiv temple where thousands of devotees visit particularly in the month of Sawan for oblation. The devotees have to pass through the hills and the river Durgawati to reach the temple. A dark path leads the devotees to the Shiv linga where no one can go without any light and it is a tradition to offer the Ganga jal from Buxar. One a devotee reach the gate of the temple, he or she has to go down through the steps and after going 360 feet inside the cave, a pond is found where water is filled year long and so it is called ‘Patal Ganga.’
A legend says about the cave that a demon received a blessing from Lard Shiva that anyone on whose head he placed his hand would be burnt to ashes. He was fascinated by the beauty of mother Parvati and so he wanted to put his hand on Lord Shiva’s head so that he would burn to ashes and he could marry Mother Parvati. Due to fear of Bhasmasur, Lord Shiva ran away and hid himself in this cave. Lord Vishnu, taking the form of Mother Parvati, proposed to Bhasmasur to dance by placing his hand on his head and as soon as Bhasmasur places his hand on his head, he was burnt to ashes due to the effect of the boon and thus the demon got his name ‘Bhasmasur.’
