Due to the heat, the condition is such that wide cracks have appeared in the fields. In such a situation, doing agricultural work has become very difficult. It has not even rained yet. There is no water even in the canals either. The farmers, standing at the crossroads of despair and hope, are struggling for agricultural work. Cracks in the field show the future of the agriculture in Bhojpur district.
Farmers are at the wit’s end due to lack of water in the Ara-Dehari-on-Sone main canal as well as other supporting canals. Agricultural work in the southern area of Bhojpur district mainly depends on the canal water but even after the passage of time, the canal is dried. Earlier water came in the canal till June 15 every year but this year, farmers are unable to understand as to by when the water will come in the canal. In such a situation, it has become a cumbersome task to plant seeds of paddy in the field. The hapless farmers are destined to bear double blow, on one hand, the rain god is angry while on the other hand, the Bhojpur District Administration has turned a Nelson’s eye towards the problems of the farmers.
Barring light rainfall in one or two blocks of Bhojpur district, there has not been any rainfall in the entire district so far to carry forward agricultural work and plant paddy in the fields.
There is an atmosphere of despair among the farmers due to lack of rainfall. Three days have passed of the Adra Nakshtra, the main season for the farmers to plant paddy in this constellation and if paddy is not planted, agricultural production will be adversely affected and the condition of the farmers will be quite miserable.
The agriculture department of Bhojpur district has set a target of planting paddy in the fields in 10891 hectares so that the farmers can plant paddy as per their capacity and their production can increase but as per the date of the department only 12.72% fields have been planted till June 15 and it will certainly adversely affect the production.
Dr. Praveen Kumar Dwiwedi, Senior Scientist cum Head Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Bhojpur, said that by planting saplings of paddy on time, the paddy crop will be ready on time otherwise if by planting the saplings late, the paddy crop will be ready late and this will affect its production. On the other hand, sowing of wheat from December 15 to January 15 is considered best but there will be problems in this also if there is delay in paddy harvesting.
