ARA--------------------Cattle rearing is going on in large scale in Bhojpur district and the number of cattle rearers is also quite big. Government has launched various schemes for the development of cattle wealth in Bhojpur district and grants are also given so that the morale of the cattle herders may be high and their economy may be good through animal husbandry. The government has also made provision to run a free vaccination campaign by the Animal Husbandry Department in the rural areas and also in the Urban areas to save the cattle from many diseases and also regarding the development and promotion of animals but the vaccination campaign is not being run by the department in Bhojpur district that causes the livestock owners along with animals are facing a lot of problems.

Sometimes a doctor is sent by the Animal Husbandry department on the request of the cattle owner but medicines are not given free of cost. A fee is charged from the cattle herders. This causes a feeling of despair among the cattle herders. They said that as to when the government has made provision for free vaccine, why a fee is charged for it is beyond the understanding of the livestock owners.

During rainy season, cattle become easy prey of different diseases and to prevent these diseases, vaccination is done as a precaution so that the cattle do not get infected with diseases and their health remains in good shape but the Animal Husbandry Department established for the convenience of cattle and for the development of livestock, never bother for them and so the question is now as to what the justification of the department is beyond understanding.

Some of the infectious diseases have no treatment and in such a situation the way of prevention is better than cure. The treatment of animals suffering from infectious diseases is also very expensive. The veterinary doctor is also not easily available for the treatment in the village. Even if the animals suffering from these diseases survive after treatment, their milk quantity is greatly reduced due to which the cattle rearers are at financial loss. For the prevention of infectious diseases, it is necessary that the animals should be vaccinated every year within the stipulayed time. The cattle suffer from some of the following diseases during rainy season. These diseases are as follows:-

Ridarpest (Animal Plague)—This disease occurs in all ruminant animals. The main symptoms of this disease are high fever, loss of appetite, decrease in milk production, blister under the tongue and on the gums etc. The eyes of the animals become red and thick yellow coloured sludge starts flowing from them. So it is important to vaccinate animals timely to prevent from this disease.

Mumps:--This disease spread by bacteria and is a disease of component remission.  This disease is also known as Dhudka, Ghotua, Ghurekha, Galghontu etc and mainly occurs in cows and buffaloes and is more prevalent during rainy season. The organism of this disease spreads to other animals through feces, urine and nasal discharge.

Hoof and mouth disease:--This is also an infectious disease spread by toxins and occurs in all ruminant animals like cows, buffaloes, goats, pigs etc. at any time throughout the year. Especially hybrid cows are more prone to this disease. Animals suffering from this disease have blisters from foot to hoof and mouth, lameness of the animals, continuous drooling etc. are the main symptoms of this disease. It is also a fatal disease.

Lame disease:--This is an infectious disease infects mainly cows and buffaloes and spreads mostly in the rainy season. In healthy animals, this disease spreads through the fodders, grains and wounds of the sick animal. The number of cattle is increased by 24 percent in the year 2023 after 12 long years although till now cattle census has not been done after the year 2012.
