ARA---------------------Think Navaratra, think dandiya! For, the Gujrati folk dance has become a popular part of the Navaratra celebrations in the town with several clubs and organizations holding ‘garba’ nights.

Ashlilta Mukt Bhojpuri Association (AMBA) organized ‘dandiya nite’  for the seventh year in a row in which over 150 men, women, boys and girls alomg with their family members took part in it.

In fact, to give a Gujarati touch to the celebrations, the traditional ‘Chaniya-Choli (Gujrati ghaghra dress for women) and ‘Kedia’ (dhoti and frock for men) are available for hire in the town for as little as Rs. 100. “I have been letting out bridal and causal ‘lehengas’ , ‘Shervanis’, ‘garba,’ dresses and matching jewellery since 2004 and have seen Ara residents growing on it, “says an owner of gift shop at Babu Bazaar.

Most of the orders are placed by organizations who want to hire dresses for a group, says he adding “Right now the ‘garba’ set with the dress, accessories and dandiyas is in demand.” While the ‘chaniya-choli’ and ‘kedia’ are available between Rs. 150 to Rs. 800,’lehengas’ and ‘sherwanis’ are available from Rs. 400 to Rs. 2000.

The new arrival on the shelf is LED lights studded ‘chaniya-choli’ for Rs. 500 to Rs. 700 which has battery supported lights at the waist and glows during the evening events. “I get the clothes dry-washed once I get it back from the customers. If there is any damage, we withhold the security money, he said.

Founder member of the AMBA, O P Pandey said that the dandiya programme started with the ‘aarati’ of Maa Durga. People from different society of Ara and also from outside of Bhojpur district participated in the programme. He said that participants were so enthusiastic that they themselves spent hundreds of rupees on their gate-up and preparation for the programme. Mayor aspirants Nitu Tiwari, her husband, Sridhar Tiwari, Mayor aspirant Rekha Tiwari, her husband Jitendra Shukla, Dr Ranjeev Ranjan Sinha, Dr Shalini Sinha, Mayor candidate Indu Devi, her husband Pren Pankaj, Dr Vikas Singh, Dr Gunjan Singh, former deputy mayor Malti Devi were the chief guest on the occasion. Ahay Vishwas Bhatt and O P Kashyap conducted the meeting and Satya Prakash extended vote of thanks. The chief guests were given ‘Mata Ki Chunari’ as blessing from Mother Goddess.

Mayor candidates did not hesitate to cash the situation in their favour and appealed the people to vote in favour of those who work to make Ara clean and beautiful. They also played ‘dhandiya’ along with others.

O P Pandey said that the AMBA succeeded in organizing the event for the sixth consecutive year with the support and cooperation of people of Ara and added his effort to add family together started sixth year ago, bore fruit this time people cutting cross the caste and party line, participated in the event with family. He said that free Dandiya Workshop was also ortanized on nthe occassiion and people who participated for the first time were given free training on dandiya.

Manglesh Tiwari, Abhishek Dwiwedi, Rahul Singh Sarkar, Namaste Jee, Anjali Singh, Priyanshu Bhaskar Pathak, Apurva, Manisha, Sneha, Abhishek, Vivek, Manoj Srivastava and Vishal contributed their mite in making the even a memorable one.
